Game Changers

Sport transcends boundaries, bringing together people from around the globe and raising awareness about critical issues. It can serve as a powerful agent for change and unity, and bring about profound social transformation. At LPF, sport has always been close to our hearts. Our founder, Lewis Pugh, is known for using endurance swimming to call for action at environmental hotspots. By swimming in regions at the frontline of the Climate Crisis, he pushes ocean issues to the top of the news cycle and uses environmental diplomacy to effect change at policy level.

Wisdom of the Wild

Across diverse landscapes and ecosystems worldwide, animals display fascinating decision-making behaviours that ensure their survival. Collective decision-making is particularly intriguing among aquatic mammals and forms an integral aspect of their daily existence. Take sperm whales – they’re known for making collective decisions through consensus, particularly in determining which direction to move in, and can take roughly-one-and a-half hours to decide how to change their course. Many researchers have noted that it’s often a slow, messy democratic process and, like navigating on land, is not without its challenges.

Yin and Yang

Last week, the Summer Solstice came and went in the Northern Hemisphere as the Earth’s tilt towards the sun reached its maximum on its year-long orbit. While up north we celebrated the longest day of the year, this tilt had the opposite effect in the Southern Hemisphere, marking the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. Our Oldest Ally

In 2013, 507-year-old Ming the clam broke the Guinness World Record as the oldest non-colonial animal in the world (non-colonial refers to animals that don’t live grouped together in large numbers). For centuries, this quahog (pronounced kō-hog) clam lived quietly in the frigid seas off the north coast of Iceland. Born in the early 1500s, Ming saw the rise and fall of empires, the discovery of new worlds, and the dawn of the modern era – all while nestled in the ocean’s seabed. Fittingly, Ming’s name pays homage to the Chinese dynasty in power when this clam was born!

Climb high, dive deep

On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made history by becoming the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Their incredible achievement is testament to the power of the human spirit and our potential for extraordinary accomplishments. In a time before smartphones or GPS, before the first successful heart transplant and space exploration, their feat stood as a shining example of what is possible when we push the boundaries of our limitations.

The Power of Imagination

We will never land on the moon. Human flight is impossible. Something like the internet can’t possibly exist. And swimming across the North Pole? Ridiculous. History has shown that what seems impossible today can become reality tomorrow. Imagination is a powerful tool that allows us to problem-solve, dream and innovate. And while much of what we imagine might never happen, without imagination, many of the scientific and environmental breakthroughs we’ve had over the years simply wouldn’t have been possible.

Inner Space

The keen Star Wars fans among you will know that ‘May the Fourth’ is Star Wars Day. But you may not know the connections between those outer space galaxies far, far away and our 'inner space' oceans – both vast, mysterious realms filled with abundant alien life that remain largely unexplored. Ocean currents are one great terrestrial Force pushing water around the world.
